The Bullington Center is a 12 acre horticultural education center in Henderson County N.C. Once the home and nursery of Bob Bullington, it is now a place for children and adults to learn about gardening and plant science with hands-on workshops. It also a place where visitors can stroll the grounds, enjoy the gardens and find a peaceful spot. More
The Place
The Bullington Center, once the nursery of Bob Bullington, is on 12 acres of rolling land. Visitors are welcome to visit and enjoy the gardens which includes a therapy garden, shade garden, perennial borders, native woodland garden, pumpkin patch and herb garden. These gardens incorporate some of the many unusual mature trees that Mr. Bullington collected and introduced to the area. There is a half-mile nature tail through the wooded area of the grounds.
The facilities at the Center include a multipurpose room, a greenhouse and headhouse (used for hands-on workshops) and an amphitheater.
Educational Programs
The Bullington Center hosts a variety of programs for school groups throughout the year. Elementary school programs such as Plant Explorations, In the Pumpkin Patch, Horticultural Therapy, Wildlife Interactions and Plant Math are offered to targeted grades. School gardens are also supported at area schools. There are also summer programs for school children, including the Nature Explorer Camp.
The BOOST program is conducted for special needs high school students as they attend weekly sessions to work on the garounds and gardens and learn basic job skills.
Adult horticultural workshops offered by the Center cover topics such as basic gardening, landscape design, grafting, wildflower ID and many others.

Twenty two BOOST students and 8 teachers went to the Biltmore Estate to work alongside their garden crew. We pulled thousands of mums in the walled garden to clear it for the massive tulip planting the following week.
The Bullington Center won 2nd place in the school competition at the NC Chrysanthemum Society show in October. Two students also entered designs; Malia won 2nd place and Kimberly won 3rd.

Hendersonville Fruit School, March 10, 11, 24 & 25. Barkslip's annual fruit school led by Bill Whipple will take place at the Bullington Center. Classes on an organic approach to orchard care, pruning and various propagation techniques will be offered during these 2 weekends.
